Abstract

820,397. Hydraulic accumulators. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 5, 1958 [June 7, 1957], No. 17988/58. Class 69 (2). An hydro-pneumatic accumulator is charged by a pump which is automatically by-passed, when the accumulator is fully charged, by means of a distributing valve 22 having a lostmotion connection with the accumulator piston. Valve 22 selectively connects a pump supply port 60 to the hydraulic chamber of the accumulator or to a return port 62 and is formed with a shaft 74 carrying a nut 90 and a sleeve 80. The accumulator piston 70 is formed with a part 72 housing abutment members 82, 88 urged apart by a spring 84. Valve 22 is retained in its end positions by spring-pressed ball detents, and in the position shown the pump supplies liquid to the accumulator through port 60 and a passage 52 and the piston move to the right; eventually abutment 88 contacts nut 90 and compresses spring 84. When the spring is sufficiently compressed, valve 22 is moved with a snap action to its other end position. When the piston approaches its left hand end position abutment 82 engages the sleeve 80 so that the spring is compressed to reverse valve 20. The accumulator is connected to an hydraulic circuit through a port 56. The valve is hydraulically balanced by means of an end chamber 48 which is supplied with pressure through passages 50, 52.
