Abstract

820,353. Diving masks. GIRDEN, B. B. Nov. 6, 1957, No. 34557/57. Class 68(2) [Also in Group XX] A face mask for under-water swimmers is adapted for water-tight engagement at least about the swimmier's eyes and has a face plate in the direct line of vision therefrom and is combined with a periscope having upper and lower reflecting surfaces of which the latter is arranged in the swimmer's direct line of vision. As shown, the face mask has an elliptical frame 12 integral with a rearwardly extending flange 13, the inner edge of which is shaped to fit the contours of the swimmer's face. A transparent plate 16 is hermetically sealed in frame 12 and the mask is held on the face by strap 18. Extending through a water-tight aperture 21 in the flange is a periscope 20 formed from an opaque tube having transparent parts 24, 25 and containing mirrors 32, 33. The tube is so arranged on the face mask that mirror 33 is the line of sight of the swimmer through the plate 16 so that the swimmer can simultaneously view above and below water. Also coupled to the mask in water-tight fashion is a breathing tube 34 having a float controlled inlet.
