Abstract
In a submerged arc welding flux consisting of a mixture of finely-divided ingredients agglomerated by means of a binder into the form of free-flowing granular particles, said ingredients including acid functioning material and basic functioning material which are present as such in the composition but which react together under the heat of the arc to form compounds having fluxing properties, the acid functioning material comprises zirconium orthosilicate in an amount of at least 25% by weight of the composition with or without silicon dioxide in an amount not exceeding 5% by weight of the composition, and the basic functioning material comprises manganese oxide and/or magnesium oxide. The binder may be sodium or potassium silicate, and the manganese oxide may be provided by manganese oxide ore containing 50% manganese. The basic functioning material may further comprise aluminium oxide and titanium oxide, the latter being added as perovskite (CaTiO3). The flux may also contain sodium or calcium fluoride; a killing agent such as ferro-silicon, silico-manganese, aluminium, silicon, chromium, vanadium or manganese; and, in an amount up to 60% by weight of the final product, an alloying ingredient such as chromium, vanadium, manganese (these replacing some or all of the killing agent), nickel, molybdenum, cobalt, copper, tungsten or niobium.
