Abstract
A process of manufacturing steel from scrap and liquid pig iron containing more than 0.5% phosphorus in an electric furnace comprises adding scrap and liquid pig, the latter being at least 20% of the total charge, and then adding lime and iron ore so that they are adjacent the crater-like channels formed by the arcs and which extend downwardly towards the liquid metal. The presence of lime and ore at the craters where the temperature is high results in the rapid formation of a liquid, highly basic slag rich in iron oxide and phosphorus in the change is removed quickly and before the carbon content has been reduced to below 0.6%. After melting and removing the phosphorus the charge is refined in the known manner.
