Abstract
827,827. Magnetic information-storage apparatus. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. June 16, 1958 [July 29, 1957], No. 19141/58. Class 40 (9). A magnetic core memory array is assembled by locating the annular cores vertically in a jig in a predetermined pattern so that an edge portion of each core projects above the jig surface, applying an adhesive sheet under pressure to the projecting edge portions of the cores so that the cores adhere to the sheet, removing the sheet and adhering cores and placing it on a matrix supporting frame, passing wires through the cores, and securing the wires to terminals on the frame. As shown in Fig. 1, 3 and 4, the jig 20 comprises a block 21 formed with two sets of parallel grooves 22, 23 intersecting at right-angles, each intersection being provided with a headed pin 25 fitted into holes 26 and secured by a retaining plate 29 so as to form discrete recesses for accommodating the cores. The retaining plate is larger than the block 21 and has upturned edges 31 so that it forms a tray for surplus cores. The assembly is secured to a vibrator unit 34 by bolts 35 passed through slots 33. In use, the annular cores are placed on the tray and are vibrated into position in individual recesses, surplus cores being brushed off. An adhesive sheet 32 is then pressed on to the portions of the cores protruding from the surface of the jig. When the sheet is removed the cores adhere to it in the pattern determined by the jig. The sheet is then inverted, and wiring by the use of a hollow needle and attachment to a matrix frame carried out in known manner. The adhesive sheet is removed after wiring by softening the adhesive with a suitable solvent, or it may remain in position in which case the adhesive properties of exposed portions is destroyed, e.g. by polymerizing a thermosetting base. Adhesive material similar to sheet 32 may be used for masking portions of the jig when smaller matrices are constructed.
