827,288. Polarizing apparatus. MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE SAINT - GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY'S. A. DES. Nov. 28, 1955 [Nov. 27, 1954], No. 34072/55. Class 97(1) Apparatus for determining the stresses in a sheet plate or block of transparent material having parallel opposed faces comprises solely means for directing a beam of polarized light obliquely' against one face of the specimen and means for measuring the birefringent power of the specimen by examination of the state of polarization of the emergent light beam, such measuring means being located either on the same side of the specimen as the beam-directing means, or on the opposite side. As shown light from a source 1 is collimated by a lens 2 and reflected by a prism 3 upon a monochromatic filter 4 and a plane polarizer 5 whence it passes to a transparent prism 6 and is incident at an angle # on the plate 8 the stresses in which are to be measured. The angle # may be varied by using prisms 6 of differing refractive indices. The light is reflected at an angle # from the lower face 12 of the plate and reaches an eyepiece 11 by way of a Babinet compensator 9 and an analyzer 10 whereby the birefringence of the plate 8 may be measured. By making observations in planes of incidence coinciding with and perpendicular to the principal stress planes the values of the main stresses at the section examined may be determined. A second prism 6 may be placed beneath the plates 8 to permit observation on the transmitted beam. The collimator and prism 3 may be moved axially by a rack 13 and pinion 14 to align the reflected beam with the axis of the eyepiece 11.
