Abstract

<PICT:0827152/III/1> In a cyclic process for removing hydrogen sulphide from gases by alternate washing with a solution of an organic compound which will yield a readily oxidizable reduction product with H2S, and contacting the resulting solution with air or O2 to regenerate the original compound, the solution is passed through a cooled bed of S crystals at least at one point in the cycle. Coal gas containing H2S1 enters an absorber via pipe 10 and flows counter-current to a stream of solution entering at 11. The solution, consisting of a dye, e.g. methylene blue in a solvent, e.g. aniline, with a catalyst, e.g. pyridine or quinoline, after absorbing H2S, passes through a water-cooled bed of S crystals 14 where S from the solution is deposited. The solution then passes to the oxidizer where it flows countercurrent to a stream of air or O2 entering at 15. The regenerated solution is returned to the absorber via pipe 11 which may also or alternatively contain the sulphur bed as indicated. Specifications 827,151 and 827,154, [both in Group XII], are referred to.
