[Also in Group XXIII] A lathe has means for sensing the position of the work-engaging part of the tool, and further means controlled thereby for re-positioning the tool after wear has taken place. In addition, means operated by the quantity of workpieces dealt with by the lathe initiate a signal for causing sharpening of the tool, and then resetting of the tool to its former position so as to produce workpieces within the required tolerance limits. A pneumatic-gauge tests each workpiece after machining, and operates a counting-device, and also a tool-adjusting device if the work is oversize, or stops the feed or the machine if undersize work is produced, and simultaneously operates an acoustic or visual alarm.
