Abstract

826,624. Heating and cooling liquids in bulk. PORTER & CO. (SALFORD) Ltd. T. Sept. 19, 1957 [Sept. 20, 1956], No. 28731/56. Class 64(3) A heating or cooling element provided on the wall of a tank 1 comprises a conduit 5 which carries heating or cooling medium and which is received in a groove in a plate 4, the plate being urged (e.g. by a tensioning arrangement as shown or other means) towards the tank wall with the tube between it and the wall and being enclosed by heat insulating material 10 moulded or otherwise applied to the tank wall. The grooved plate may lie in contact with the wall 1 as shown in Fig. 3 or an ungrooved plate may be interposed between the grooved plate and the tank wall as shown in Fig. 2. A plurality of such elements may be utilized and these may be interconnected in series or in parallel. The conduits associated with neighbouring tanks may be interconnected. The conduits 5 may extend horizontally, vertically or at any intermediate angle across the tank wall. When the invention is used as a tanker vehicle the tubes 5 may be coupled into the engine coolant system and thermostatic means actuated by the temperature conditions in the tank may be provided to vary accordingly the cooling effect of the engine radiator. In an embodiment described only in the Provisional Specification the conduit 5 is received in a groove in the wall of the tank and is then covered by a flat plate.
