Abstract
<PICT:0826185/III/1> In a contact apparatus for the continuous production of hydrocyanic acid from vaporized formamide a reaction chamber has an internal cross-sectional area which increases in the direction of flow of the formamide and a catalytically active surface area which also increases in the direction of flow, but to a greater extent than the cross-sectional area. The temperature of the catalytically active surface may also increase in the direction of flow of the formamide. The apparatus shown has a reaction chamber of three sections of increasing cross-sectional area, each comprising a plurality of connected iron tubes heated by circulating gases at 340-360 DEG C., 360-390 DEG C., 410 DEG C. respectively. The first section contains 20 tubes of 1 1/2 metres in length and 50 millimetres internal diameter, the second section contains 65 tubes, 2 metres in length and internal diameter of 38 millimetres and the third section contains 240 tubes, 3 metres in length and internal diameter of 20 millimetres, giving catalytically active surface areas increasing from 4.7 square metres to 15.5 square metres and 45.2 square metres respectively.
