Abstract
A magnesium-aluminium spinel is prepared by firing above 1600 DEG C. a mixture in stoichiometrical proportions of caustic or sintered magnesite and calcined alumina, corundum, or bauxite, the Fe2O3 and SiO2 content of which is not more than 5% and 7% respectively.ALSO:A basic refractory brick, preferably of magnesite or chrome-magnesite, is rendered more resistant to temperature changes by the inclusion of 6-40, preferably 10-30, % of a synthetically-prepared magnesium-aluminium spinel. The spinel, which is used in finely-ground form, is prepared by firing above 1600 DEG C. a mixture in stoichiometrical proportions of caustic or sintered magnesite and calcined alumina, corundum, or bauxite, the Fe2O3 and SiO2 content of which which is not more than 5% and 7% respectively.
