Abstract
The invention comprises complexes of iodine with quaternary ammonium compounds of the general formula <FORM:0825676/IV (b)/1> (wherein at least one of R1 and R3 is a C12\t to C18 alkyl group, at least one of R2 and R3 is a (CH2CH2O)y. H group, wherein y is an integer within the range of 2 to 200, R3 when not otherwise provided for is a lower alkyl, benzyl or phenyl radical, R4 is a lower alkyl, benzyl or substituted benzyl radical (e.g. lower alkylbenzyl, lower alkoxy-benzyl, nitro-benzyl and halo-benzyl radicals), and X is a salt-forming anion), and the preparation thereof by dissolving iodine in the quaternary ammonium compound, or by dissolving iodine in a volatile solvent and mixing the solvent solution with the quaternary ammonium compound. The iodine complexing can be effected in part by means of an iodophor selected from anionic and nonionic surface-active agents, and the iodine can be solubilized in part by association with an alkali metal halide. The complexes can be associated with a water-miscible liquid or a water-soluble solid (e.g. urea or a synthetic detergent). The qualification "lower" means that the group in question contains one to five carbon atoms.ALSO:Germicidal iodine compositions contain complexes of iodine with quaternary ammonium compounds of the general formula <FORM:0825676/VI/1> (wherein at least one of R1 and R3 is a C12 to C18 alkyl group, at least one of R2 and R3 is a (CH2CH2O)y.H group wherein y is an integer within the range of 2 to 200, R3 when not otherwise provided for is a lower alkyl, benzyl or phenyl radical, R4 is a lower alkyl, benzyl or substituted benzyl radical (e.g. lower alkyl benzyl, lower alkoxy benzyl, nitro-benzyl and halo-benzyl radicals), and X is a salt-forming anion) in admixture with a water miscible liquid or with a water soluble solid (e.g. urea or a synthetic detergent. It is desirable that the diluent should generally include a component providing an acid reaction in aqueous media (e.g. hydrochloric or phosphoric acid). The qualification "lower" means that the group in question contains one to five carbon atoms. The iodine complexing can be effected in part by means of an iodophor selected from anionic and non-ionic surface active agents, and the iodine can be solubilized in part by association with an alkali metal halide. The compositions may be used to impregnate fibrous materials to impart disinfectant properties thereto.
