Abstract
825,087. Casting-processes. DAUSSAN, H. J. Jan. 29, 1957 [Jan. 31, 1956], No. 3087/57. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group II] Ingots are cast in a mould in which there is provided at least one collapsible chain of containers whose walls are destructible by the molten metal, each container having a charge of additive substance which reacts with the metal. As shown, an ingot mould L<SP>1</SP> has a series of containers 1-4 suspended at intervals by supporting elements 5 from a rod 7 across the top of the mould. Each container has a charge in the form of granules, powder or tablets of such composition that it may be reducing, oxidizing, carburizing, or decarburizing to the metal, or may result in an endothermic or an exothermic reaction. A scraper 8, formed of corrugated cardboard, may be suspended at the lower end of the chain, the scraper rising with the liquid metal and protecting the sides of the mould from slag produced by the reactions. In one modification, Fig. 12, the mould L<SP>2</SP> may have the shape of a rail, the containers 44-46 in the part corresponding to the head having a carburizing action, and the containers 47-49 in the part corresponding to the foot of the rail may be decarburizing. In a further modification, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the scraper may he in sections such that the lowermost fits into the next above as it rises, and the two then fit into the next above. The containers may be of corrugated cardboard and may be partly fireproofed, e.g. on the upper part, and the supporting elements may be of annealed iron wire, a synthetic material, or asbestos twine.
