Abstract
<PICT:0813834/III/1> Cryolite and/or sodium fluoride and, if desired, sodium metal are recovered from aluminium reduction cell linings by heating at at least 1000 DEG C. at a suitable pressure, and condensing said materials from the resulting vapour. Preferred temperature ranges are 1050 DEG to 1300 DEG C. and pressures of 0.001 to 0.1 atms. and higher are referred to. The reduction cell lining may consist of the inner carbon lining and/or an outer lining of alumina, insulating brick or magnesia, but when siliceous materials are used they are preferably mixed with the carbon lining; the materials need not be finely ground but often need only be roughly crushed. In the illustrated apparatus the cell lining material is placed in an evaporator 11, preferably of stainless steel which is arranged in the bottom of a vessel comprising an inner shell 10, also preferably made of steel though graphite is satisfactory, and an insulating outer layer 15 of zirconia or other refractory. The cell lining material is heated to the desired temperature by a high frequency current in water-cooled coil 19 or by direct passage of a current between electrodes in the material or by burning fuel around the evaporator. The vessel is connected at the top to a head chamber 16 having a connection to a vacuum pump, and baffles 20 and 21, respectively having a ring of holes and a central hole, are provided to assist condensation. The condensate may be removed by mechanical scraping, for which devices may be provided and if desired, the process may be made continuous by the provision of pressure locks for the addition and withdrawal of material. The apparatus shown can have an inside diameter of 3.5 ins. and a height of 18 or 28 ins. The fluoride compounds and sodium are separately collected, e.g. at 24 and 25 respectively, and it is stated to be generally desirable to keep the temperature of the condenser where the vapour contains only sodium at above 98 DEG C., the melting point of sodium. Examples are given.
