Abstract

813,829. Soldering. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 10, 1956, No. 4256/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] Two members, at least one of which is ceramic, are bonded together by forming between their adjacent surfaces an alloy including titanium, zirconium, hafnium or thorium, the alloy being produced by placing in contact with the members at least one layer of at least one component metal of the alloy, heating to a temperature above the eutectic melting point of the alloy and cooling to solidify the alloy. The alloying metal may be copper, nickel, molybdenum, platinum, chromium, cobalt or iron, and the alloy should be one which liquefies at a temperature below the melting point of any of the alloyed metals and below the softening point of the ceramic. To bond titanium and ceramic members a shim of nickel is interposed and heated to the melting point of a nickel and titanium eutectic alloy. Similarly, to bond alloying metal, such as nickel, and ceramic members, a shim of titanium is interposed. Alternatively, two or more foil shims, one of titanium or zirconium or an alloy thereof and one of an alloying metal, may be used. Specification 813,828 is referred to.
