Abstract
Alkali metal bicarbonates for use in fire-extinguishing compositions, are rendered free flowing by the addition of alkaline earth metal carbonates the particles of which are coated with a layer of fatty acid having more than eight carbon atoms per molecule. The bicarbonate of Li, Wa, K, Rb or Cs of particle size such that 3-20 per cent is retained on a No. 200 sieve, 6.5-35 per cent passes through a No. 200 but is retained on a No. 325 and 40-90 per cent passes through a No. 325 sieve, is mixed with 0.5-5.0 wt. per cent of a carbonate of Mg, Ca, Sr, or Ba of particle size 0.5-10 microns coated with a layer of stearic acid amounting to 0.5-6.0 per cent wt. of the carbonate. Addition of an alkaline earth metal salt of a fatty acid having more than eight carbon atoms per molecule preferably magnesium stearate in proportion 0.5-1.0 per cent wt. of the total composition, is specified to increase the bulk density of the material.
