[Also in Group XXXVI] A dynamometer is formed by a torque coupling which comprises two coaxial shafts 1, 2 coupled for rotation together by at least one piston 5 in cylinder 6 arrangement on shaft 2 engaging a corresponding number of abutment arms 4 of the other shaft 1, with a system of passages 39, 40 communicating with each cylinder 6 and charged with liquid under pressure, each piston 5 transmitting force arising from the reaction between it and its abutting arm 4 to the liquid within the system which communicates with a pressure gauge 9, controlling an electric switch 43, 44 to operate at a predetermined maximum pressure of the liquid corresponding to the maximum desired torque to be transmitted by the coupling, with slip rings 46, 47, 48 and brushes for establishing electrical connections to the switch. Applied to a coupling between an electric motor and a double screw plastic extruding machine, the switch is arranged to cut out the motor when the pressure indicating needle 43 moves off the contact strip 44 and to give an alarm when the needle 43 contacts the strip 45 as an excessive torque is approached. The needle moves off one end of the strip 44 with an excessive torque and off the other end if the pressure in the system falls to indicate a fault in the protective system formed by the torque coupling. The pressure gauge may be calibrated to read direct in pounds/feet torque. Specification 809,371, [Group XXIV], is referred to.
