811,849. Centrifugal pumps. PARKINSON COWAN Ltd., [formerly PARKINSON & COWAN Ltd.]. Aug. 2, 1956 [Aug. 6, 1955], No. 22710/55. Class 110 (1). A closed impeller of a centrifugal pump comprises widely-spaced blades the leading and trailing faces of which meet in a rounded apex and diverge towards the periphery of the impeller, the trailing face being straight and, at least near the apex, substantially tangential to a circle struck from the centre of the impeller. A centrifugal pump for a washing machine comprises an impeller having widely spaced blades 23, Fig. 4, with straight leading and trailing faces 26, 27 which subtend an angle of 25 to 90 degrees, but preferably 30 to 45 degrees, at the apex 30, which has a radius of curvature of 1/18 to 5/16 inch, but preferably 3/16 inch, for impeller diameters greater than 4 inch, or 0.03 to 0.06 of the impeller diameter for smaller diameters. The blade passages increase in cross-sectional area radially outwardly and are of constant or increasing cross-sectional dimension as viewed in Fig. 3. These features reduce the tendency to clogging by the accumulation of fibres. Preferably the apex 30 extends, as shown, in the direction of rotation beyond a radius normal to the trailing edge 27. The impeller is formed from two die-castings fastened together by integral rivets 29.
