Abstract
811,304. Ball and socket joints. COSSEL, H. VON, and LANGEN V., [trading as EHRENREICH & CIE A.]. July 8, 1955 [March 16, 1955], No. 19846/55. Class 65(2) The resilient bearing sockets 6, 7, Fig. 1, of a ball-and-socket joint, have hemispherical bearing surfaces of the same curvature as the ball 3 and one or both extends past the central plane of the ball so as to provide a clearance between the ball and the sockets when they are assembled in the housing 1. The sockets are then loaded by the closure cap 9 to bring their bearing surfaces into contact with the ball. A spacing ring which may be corrugated may be arranged betweem the meeting surfaces of the sockets which may also be corrugated. Annular grooves may be provided in the surfaces of the sockets and the housing to assist the sockets to yield when the closure cap is applied. The sockets may be flanged and the closure cap may be screwed into the housing. The central part of the ball may be cylindrical. In Fig. 8 the sockets have toothed interengaging surfaces, and the lower socket has extensions 20. 21 to prevent its rotation.
