Abstract
Corrosion of metal, e.g. aluminium, pressure containers by acids liberated during storage therein of aerosol liquids, for example insecticides, lubricants, cleaning agents, deodorants or fire extinguishing preparations, which are admixed with an inert dispersing liquid of low-boiling point, the vapour of which generates a pressure in the container when the nozzle thereof is opened, is prevented by adding from 0.01 to 1 per cent by weight of an inhibitor consisting of a mixture of at least one aromatic or araliphatic aldehyde with at least one basic nitrogen-containing aromatic compound. Suitable aldehyde ingredients are benzaldehyde, furfuraldehyde, phenylacetaldehyde and alphanaphthaldehyde and suitable nitrogen containing aromatic components are nicotine, cinchonine, aniline and quinoline. An inhibitor concentrate to be added to the aerosol liquid may be composed as follows: 15 gms. of benzaldehyde, 25 gms. of nicotine sulphate, 45 gms. of methanol and 15 gms. of ethyl acetate; the methanol and ethyl acetate components may be replaced by 60 gms. of dimethylformamide or by 60 gms. of glycol monomethyl ether. In an example, corrosion of an aluminium container by an insecticidal aerosol liquid made by dissolving 50 gms. of benzene hexachloride in 1000 gms. of petroleum distillates and mixing the solution with 1200 gms. of "Freon" (Registered Trade Mark) is inhibited by the addition of 3 gms. of benzaldehyde and 6 gms. of nicotine sulphate. In a further example, a hair lotion consisting of a mixture of 89 gms. ethyl alcohol, 0.5 gms. cholesterol, 2 gms. glycerol, 1.5 gms. of a wetting agent, 7 gms. of water and 110 ml. of "Freon" is inhibited by the addition of 0.35 gms. of phenylacetaldehyde and 0.35 gms. of cinchonine. In a further example, a deodorant preparation consisting of 6 gms. of pineneedle oil, 6 gms. of formaldehyde (37 per cent solution), 18 gms. of acetone, 60 gms. of isopropyl alcohol and 110 ml. of "Freon" is inhibited by the addition of 0.5 gms. of furfuraldehyde and 0.4 gms. of quinoline.
