Apparatus for applying bread crumbs and the like from a hopper to foodstuffs, e.g. fish cakes, fillets or scallops, supported on a wire-mesh belt after a previous treatment with liquid or paste, e.g. batter, wherein a supporting plate close beneath the upper run of the belt supports a layer of crumbs and a guiding plate close beneath the lower run of the belt guides a supply of crumbs round a substantial portion of the forward supporting roller of the belt to guide crumbs from the guiding plate up to the upper run of the conveyer. Fish sticks 11 are fed by a conveyer 12 to a wire mesh feed conveyer 13 which deposits them on a main wire mesh conveyer 14 running beneath a bread-crumb hopper 16. Hopper 16 has an opening 17 extending the width of its base into which a deflector member protrudes to divide the crumbs into two showers or to close the opening. The ends of member 18 are mounted on a pair of levers 19, 21 an arm 22 connected to lever 21 being lockable in any position by a bolt 23 so as to hold member 18 in the required position. A plate 24 close beneath the upper run of belt 14 supports a layer of crumbs which have passed through the belt. A guiding plate 26 is arranged close below the lower run and around the forward supporting roller 27 of belt 14 to guide surplus crumbs falling beyond the end of plate 24 towards the upper run of belt 14. Plate 26 may have holes 28 through which some crumbs fall into a collecting hopper 29 from which they are fed back to main hopper 16. A sliding cover may be provided to cover or partly cover some of the holes 28.
