Abstract

810,511. Lubricating bearings. CARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 2, 1956 [Sept. 19, 1955], No. 23840/56. Classes 12 (1) and 12 (3). A cartridge-type bearing unit comprises a casing 11, having end plugs 15, 16, in which preloaded bearings 13, 14 are mounted to support a shaft 24 which passes through the end plug 15, and oil mist lubricating means for the bearings disposed within the casing 11. The bearings 13, 14 are spaced by a sleeve 28 having ramped end portions from which oil is thrown outwardly through the races of the bearings, the oil having been fed to the ramps from oilsoaked washers 19 and wicks 47. After passing through the bearings 13, 14, the oil is thrown outwardly by slingers 26, 27 and returns to the central reservoir of washers 19 through longitudinal grooves 49 in the casing 11. Wick retainers 17, 18 carrying the wicks 47 are located adjacent the ends of the washers 19 and these have radial holes 53 for the passage of oil. The unit is particularly applicable to a high-velocity turbine-driven fluid circulating unit for air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
