Abstract

810,369. Suction cleaners. ELECTROLUX CORPORATION. Nov. 11, 1957 [Nov. 13, 1956 ; Nov. 29, 1956], No. 35099/57. Classes 8(1) and 8(2). A latch 30, Fig. 1, by which a hinged end cover 24 is secured to the suction inlet end of suction cleaner casing 10 containing a filter bag 74 is rendered inoperative in the event of the bag being omitted from the casing by means which is itself rendered inoperative by the presence of the bag 74 within the casing 10. The latch 30 is biassed by a spring 34 so as to be engaged by a keeper 38 extending between ears 36, Fig. 3, projecting from the upper end of a casing ring 22 providing that the hooked end 118 of a downwardly biassed lever 104, Fig. 6, pivoted to a bracket 84 secured between the casing 10 and a trim piece 85 is held up by engagement of a curved lip 112 of the lever 104 with the rim of rigid end drive 76 of a paper bag 78. When the bag is removed from the cleaner casing, the latch 30 is prevented from closing by its abutment against the hook 118 as shown in Fig. 3, and when using a cloth bag 120, Fig. 4, having its neck secured to a ring 122, a gasket 124 carried by ring 122 abuts the curved end 112 of the lever 104 and holds the hook 118 away from the latch 30. The bracket 84 also has upwardly extending front and rear arms 86, 90 through which extend a rod 94, Fig. 5, biassed outwardly by a coil spring 96 so as to engage a projection 101 of the cover 24 and so open the latter on pressing a latch release button 40. The inner end of the rod 94 is secured to motor switch operating member 100 and moves it to the off position when the cover is released. In a modification the lever 204, Fig. 8, for rendering the latch 30 inoperative is pivoted about a pin 206 located in a recess 202 of an inner plate 73 of the cover 24 and is held away from the latch either by the end disc 76 of the paper bag 78 or by a gasket 216, Fig. 10 (not shown), carried by the neck ring of a cloth bag. In a further modification the pivoted lever 204 is mounted on the inner face of disc 73 and projects therethrough to be engaged either by the rigid end disc of a paper bag or by the gasket of a cloth bag. In all constructions the latch is automatically opened by pneumatic means 42 when the hook pressure generated by a clogged filter bag exceeds a predetermined value. Specifications 724,179 and 784,606 are referred to.
