Abstract

810,091. Refining refractory metals by electrolysis. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 6, 1955 [June 18, 1954], No. 18041/54. Class 41. To refine the metals uranium, thorium, beryllium, cerium, niobium, zirconium, or their alloys, the impure metal or alloy is electrolysed in a fused salt bath containing a chloride of the metal or metals and one or more of the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal chlorides, using an inert anode conductor carrying the impure metal or alloy in electrical contact with it and applying between the anode and a cathode, preferably of the pure metal or metals to be deposited, a potential lower than that generated by a cell having the pure metal or metals as cathode and the anode conductor as anode. Preferably an inert atmosphere, e.g. of argon, is maintained over the fused bath. The refining may be effected in a cell 1 of sintered alumina having a non-gastight cover 2 with a feed port 3 and an inlet 4 for the inert gas. The inert anode conductor comprises a rod 5 and a plate 11 of graphite on which the impure metal is located at 12. The cathode comprises a graphite rod 7 into which is threaded a metal, e.g. uranium, rod 8 depending within a cup 10 of sintered alumina located on the graphite plate 11, the refined metal depositing in the bottom of the cup. Protective sleeves 6, 9 of inert refractory material surround the anode and cathode graphite rods above and just below the surface of the bath. Specifications 760,217 and 773,535, [both in Group II], are referred to.
