Abstract

819,290. Treating tobacco. REEMTSMA CIGARETTENFABRIKEN G.m.b.H., [trading as REEMTSMA, H. F. & P. F.]. March 22, 1957 [March 31, 1956], No. 9441/57. Class 130. Closed-ended probes 2, 2a each have respective steam and compressed-air outlets 4, 3 (or 3, 4), operative during movement of the probes into and/or out of a tobacco bale or mass B, moistening of which is thus effected in a few minutes. Three probes 2 on a spider la surround a central steadying probe 2a. A cover cloth T having probe-insertion apertures D is provided. The probe assembly is surrounded by a copper cover 8 with a vapour extraction flue 9 and is mounted by a nut 7 on a screwed spindle 6 selectively rotated from fast and slow-feed motors 10, 11 via a clutch 12 and gearing 13. Steam and compressed air are supplied by lines 16, 17 on reels or by telescopic connectors. Operation.-A weight 21 which normally holds steam and compressed-air valves 18, 19 closed, respectively directly and via a mercury switch 24 controlling a solenoid 25, is supported by the tobacco mass B as the descending probes 2, 2a pass into it and allows first compressed air and then steam to enter the tobacco, the valves being shut in the reverse order as the ascending probes leave the tobacco. Automatic motor switch means 27 determine the probe penetration depth, time of inward and outward movement and of dwell at maximum penetration. Feed of the probe assembly when out of contact with the mass B is rapid and when in contact therewith is slow or rapid on inward movement and slow or rapid on outward movement. Especially where it is desired to treat only small quantities of tobacco from a plurality of bales for subsequent mixing, the probe assembly may be only partially inserted into each bale. The compressed-air pressure is the same as or greater or less than the steam pressure and the compressed-air screens off downward moistening. A pipe 26 leads off condensate forming above the valve 18 when closed.
