Abstract
A reactor for reaction between a discrete solid, e.g superphosphate, and a gas, e.g. ammonia, comprises a solid feed hopper 1 mounted on a horizontally disposed elongated tubular channel 2 in gas-tight fashion and the channel carries a hollow shaft 5 with archimedean-screw conveyer helices 6 which advance the powdered material from the hopper 1 to the opposite end of the tubular channel to an exit or exits 10. The ammonia, which may be injected into the reaction chamber in a gaseous or a liquid form as <PICT:0818867/III/1> the heat of reaction will vaporize liquids, is led into the reaction solid via inlets 11 in the hollow shaft or by inlets into the shell 2 (not shown). The length and shape of the conveyer screw; speed of the forward motion of the superphosphate; the rate of injection and strength of the ammonia; the time of contact of the superphosphate with the ammonia; the size of the reactor channel and the position of the inlets may be controlled so as to attain the required ammoniation or reaction. The hopper 1 may be fitted with automatic or constant feed device mechanisms such as ultrasonic or magnetically operated vibrators.
