Abstract
A process for the production of steel in a basic electric arc T furnace comprises adding, after oxidization, a deoxidizing refining slag rich in silica and free from iron oxide, reducing agents such as carbon being added to the slag in such quantities that silicon which is produced in situ deoxidizes and siliconizes the steel until it is partly or completely killed. The slag may consist of lime, fluorspar, or metallic oxides such as alumina together with quartz and it may be wholly responsible for siliconizing the steel or additions of ferro silicon may be made. The furnace lining was not severely attacked by a slag containing 35 per cent CaO and 55 per cent SiO2 and the steel produced is claimed to be especially clean.
