Abstract
<PICT:0816815/III/1> <PICT:0816815/III/2> <PICT:0816815/III/3> An apparatus for determining the presence of carbon dioxide, or other substance capable of being liberated in gaseous form, in a liquid, by the addition of a reagent to said liquid, comprises a reaction chamber 34 through which liquid and reagent are pumped in predetermined proportions by means of pump 18, pressure of said chamber being reduced to cause the ready liberation of said gas from the liquid in proportion to the quantity thereof in said liquid while the change in pressure is measured directly by means of the monometer device 38 or by means of electrical means 58 and the pressure is related to the proportion of the substance in the liquid under examination. The liquid under test, e.g. blood plasma, and the reagent are usually supplied from bottles 26 and 28, but, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the feeding flask 26 for the liquid under examination may be replaced by a device for supplying a plurality of different samples automatically to the analyser. Distilled water may be introduced into tube 12 by the feed device to space these samples from each other as they flow through tube 12, the turntable 6 being rotated at suitable speed. Samples are picked up by means of tube 70 and transmitted to tube 12. When the turntable is to be used it is advisable to make provision to compensate for loss of gas such as CO2. Therefore an atmosphere containing a quantity of carbon dioxide comparable with the quantity thereof in the atmosphere surrounding sample is supplied to a hood 76 made of plastic material by means of a tube 78 and the gas mixture flows continuously at a low rate in and out of the hood passing out through the slight clearance between the skirt 84 of the hood of the peripheral edge 86 of the turntable 64.
