814,756. Roasting, cooking and sterilizing coffee, cocoa and grain. PROST, J. June 15, 1956 [June 23, 1955], No. 18677/56. Class 58. [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for the fluidized roasting, cooking, sterilizing and drying of coffee or cocoa beans and cereal grain such as wheat and maize comprises a plurality of successive, intercommunicating compartments 11, 12 and 13, Fig. 1, having perforated bases 17 forming the tops of chambers 18, 19 and 20, from which hot gas, e.g. air or steam, is blown through a bed of the beans or grain supported on the bases, the compartments being separated by partitions 14 and 15, which are not as high as the bed is deep, so that beans or grain can move from one compartment to the next. The compartments are enclosed by a casing 10, in which gas is collected. This gas is returned by a fan 32 to the chamber 19 through a conduit 33, in which a dustextractor may be fitted. Hot gas is supplied to the chambers 18 and 20 through conduits 22 and 23. The chamber 19 is connected to the chambers 18 and 20 by conduits 51 and 52 provided with valves 53. A cooling compartment 16 having a perforated base may be provided, cold gas, e.g. air, being supplied to its associated chamber 21 through a conduit 25. The supply of gas to the chambers may be continuous or pulsating. Baffles 26, 27, 28 and 29, extending partly into the bed, are provided. The beans or grain may enter the apparatus through an inlet 30 and leave by an outlet 31. The compartments 11 to 16 may have a common base in the form of a perforated plate, which may be vibrated separately, or together with the compartments.
