Abstract
803,472. Tobacco smoke filters. MULLER, P. A. May 6, 1955 [Feb. 11, 1955], No. 13240/55. Class 130. A cigarette filter plug comprises longitudinally extending flexible strips 18 having openings 3 and/or border indentations 7 with projecting frayed edges. A spirally wound or sinuously folded " carrier " web extending longitudinally of the plug and surrounded on all sides by the strips 18 may be provided, and/or the strips may be associated with embossed strips 19 and cotton or rayon fibres 20 or the strips may be used alone and bundled in the manner of the fibres 20, which may be replaced by or associated with flakes of carbamide resin, latex, neoprene or viscose foam. A thin paper sheath 16 is employed. The openings 3 may be circular or oblong with rounded ends and may form a regular pattern, and the indentations 7 may be semi-circular or such as to form a scalloped or irregularly frayed strip edge. The strips 18 may be roughened on at least one side or obliquely corrugated when the openings 3 may be cracks formed by excessive corrugation. The strips 18 and carrier web may be of absorbent paper, woven fabric, " plastic " or aluminium foil, compressed " plastic " foam, which may be surface coated, paper metallized on one or both sides, or natural or synthetic fibres made into a stiffened fleece. Strips 18 of varying width, surface configuration and material may be used in combination. Two-layer or multi-layer strips as described in Specification 796,678 may be used. The carrier web may be corrugated axially or obliquely or with two intersecting sets of oblique corrugations.
