Abstract

803,357. Anodizing aluminium alloys. SCHMIDT G.m.b.H., K. Jan. 5, 1956 [Jan. 7, 1955], No. 469/56. Class 41. Aluminium alloy articles such as pistons and cylinders for I.C. engines are electrolytically surface-oxidized by a process in which they are first pre-treated in a pickling or etching bath to remove those alloy components which would hinder electrolytic oxidation and then are mechanically treated to compact and/or smooth the porous and rough pickled surface. The pickling may be effected either chemically or electrolytically in nitric acid to which hydrofluoric acid may be added, followed, if desired, by heat treatment to remove occluded hydrogen formed during the pickling prior to mechanical compacting as by a gentle pass through a rolling mill or in the case of cylindrical members by the insertion of a slightly tapered mandrel. If a hard and strong surface layer is required, there may be used dilute sulphuric acid at a temperature between 0‹ and 3‹ C. with an applied voltage of 50 volts or more and a current density of, say, 7 amps./sq. dm.
