Abstract
803,163. Moulding ceramic articles. ELECTRIC MACHINERY MFG. CO. April 14, 1955 [April 26, 1954], No. 10739/55. Class 87(2). A method of forming a material in a thin layer 35 from a liquid mix 36 containing comminuted solids, e.g., the titanates of barium, strontium or lead, and a thermoplastic resin, e.g., low molecular weight polyvinyl chloride (PVC), upon an impervious surface 10, comprises forming a body of the mix 36 and passing the surface 10 upwardly in a direction making an angle to the horizontal beneath and in contact with the mix whereby a film 35 of the mix adheres to the surface 10. The surface 10 is a movable endless metallic belt passing round two drums 11, 12 and having an inclined portion 18 leading to a horizontal supporting surface 16. A parting agent, e.g., mineral oil, is sprayed onto the belt 10 at 20 which passes between electric radiant heaters 24, 25 which raise the temperature of the belt 10 above the polymerization temperature of the PVC, e.g., to 400F. to 450F. The portion 18 of the belt 10 continues below a hopper 31, having side walls 40, to which the mix 36 is fed under control of a valve 34 to maintain a constant liquid level 37 in the hopper 31, a wiper 39 preventing leakage of liquid. The level 37 is kept below the level of the surface 16. The preheated belt 10 emerging from the mix 36 carries with it a viscous liquid layer 42 and the layer 35 which, passing over the surface 16, is heated by electric resistors 46, e.g., to 350F. to 375F., to complete polymerization of the PVC. A knife 51 separates the resulting ware 50 from the belt 10. The ware 50 is cut to size and baked to burn out the resin and plasticizer and to unite the ceramic particles to form a uniformly thin plate. The liquid mix may comprise, proportions by weight, 10 to 12 parts comminuted ceramic, 1 to 3 parts PVC and 1 to 3 parts plasticizer. The thickness of the layer 35 may be controlled by the degree of preheating of the belt 10. In a modification, the thickness is determined by an adjustable doctor blade on the lower lip of the forward wall 41 of the hopper 31, the preheaters 24, 25 being omitted.
