802,338. Sterilizing liquids. CIBOIT, J. J. April 25, 1956 [April 29, 1955], No. 12739/56. Class 49. In apparatus for pasteurizing or sterilizing liquid or semi-liquid product comprising a chamber wherein the product is subjected to steam, a chamber wherein the steamed product is expanded, and a steam-heated surface heat exchanger for preliminary heating of the product, there is provided, in the pipe feeding steam to the surface heat exchanger, a valve controlled by a thermostatic relay responsive to difference between the temperature in the expansion chamber and that of the product entering the steam treatment chamber, so as to obtain a predetermined dilution, preferably no dilution, of the product being pasteurized or sterilized. Cold milk or cream fed by a pipe 2 is injected, after being heated to a temperature tl, through an atomizing nozzle 3 into a chamber 1 and steam fed by a pipe 4 is injected into the chamber at 5, the milk or cream collecting in the lower part of the chamber 1 is fed through an atomizing nozzle 7 into an expansion chamber 6, and the treated milk or cream, at a temperature t2, collecting in the lower part of the chamber 6 is removed by a pump 8, the milk or cream in the pipe 2 being caused to flow through a surface heat exchanger 9 which is supplied with sufficient steam by a pipe 10, independently of the steam supply to the chamber 1, to heat the milk or cream to the temperature t1; a valve 12 in the steam supply pipe 10 controls supply of steam to the heat exchanger 9 in response to a relay 13, which measures, through connections 14 and 15, any difference between t1 and t2, tl being maintained substantially equal to t2 when dilution of the milk or cream is to be avoided. The cold milk or cream may be heated in a surface heat exchanger supplied with steam from the expansion chamber 6 before it is heated to the temperature tl in the heat exchanger 9.
