Abstract

Niobium pentachloride low in oxygen is obtained by treating niobium ores or compounds in admixture with carbon with chlorine at a temperature of above 320 DEG C. and passing the volatile reaction products with excess chlorine into intimate contact with carbon heated to above 400 DEG C., the carbon preferably being in the form of a porous coherent mass. Alternatively the carbon may be in the form of particles maintained in the fluidized state by the reaction products and excess chlorine. The porous carbon mass may be formed from wood charcoal or nut shell charcoal by mixing it with an aqueous solution of an organic binder for example starch, shaping the mixture to the desired form and heating the shaped mass in an inert atmosphere to carbonize the binder. According to an example a silica tube was provided with a porous plug of carbon prepared by mixing coconut shell carbon with a starch paste and rolling the mixture to produce a cylinder which fitted into the silica tube, the tube then being heated in argon to carbonize the starch. A mixture of niobite and powdered carbon in excess was inserted in a silica boat into the silica tube and the tube heated to raise the temperature of the silica boat to 400-600 DEG C. and that of the carbon plug to 500 DEG C. Chlorine was then passed into the reaction vessel until the reaction was complete. The niobium pentachloride was condensed and had an oxygen content less than 0.5 per cent.
