Abstract

801,376. Regulating. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 30, 1956 [May 31, 1955], No. 16742/56. Class 7(6) [Also in Group XXVI] The control means of a fuel injection pump 14 is provided with a dashpot 50 which after an initial period of free movement, retards the movement of the pump control rod 30 in the fuel-increase direction when the control lever 46 is moved rapidly towards full throttle position. In a multicylinder engine, each cylinder is provided with a pump 14 actuated by rockers 18, the control rods 30 being connected to a pump adjusting rod 34 carrying a lever 48 connected to the dashpot piston 54. A lever 38 on the end of rod 34 is connected through a resilient telescopic link 40 to a speed governor 44 which is adjusted by a manual or pedal operated throttle lever 46. The dashpot is supplied with lubricating oil from a cup 64 through a port 66 mid-way along the travel of piston 54 so that on rapid movement of lever 46 towards full throttle the piston 54 moves rapidly to the left initially until port 66 is covered and then is retarded, the escape of fluid then taking place through a small orifice 68. A non-return valve 70 opens when the lever 46 is moved towards idling to permit unretarded movement of the piston 54 in the fuel-decrease direction. Each pump rocker 18 is mounted on a shaft 20 between inlet and exhaust valve rockers 22, 24.
