Abstract
801,182. Potting electrical apparatus &c. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 8, 1958 [Feb. 16, 1955], No. 4677/55. Class 87(2). A method of encasing an article in a mixture of a resin and a filler, comprises placing the article and the filler in a mould, placing the mould under vacuum and admitting the resin in liquid form to the mould at a point of the mould remote from the vacuum connection. The resin may, before admission to the mould, be subjected to a vacuum to remove entrained air. After casting, air under pressure may be used to compact the casing around the article. In an example, two evacuating chambers 22, 23 with air extraction pipes 33, 47, with cocks 34, 36 and 48, 49, joined to a common pipe 35, are arranged above each other. The first chamber 22 has a reservoir 27 for the resin, is connected by a pipe 28, with a cock 29, to a resin receptacle 30 and is connected by a pipe 31, with a cock 32, to the inlet manifold 42 of a mould 40 in the second chamber 23. The mould 40 has an outlet manifold 43 connected by a pipe 44, with a cock 45, to an overflow container 46. In operation, the article and the filler are placed in the mould 40, and with cocks 36, 45 and 49 open, cocks 29, 32, 34 and 48 closed, and both chambers 22, 23 under vacuum, the cock 29 is opened and the resin drawn into the reservoir 27, cock 29 is then closed and the air entrained in the resin is extracted by the vacuum. Cock 36 is then closed and cocks 32 and 34 opened, admitting air to the chamber 22 and resin to the mould 40 by the pipe 31 and the manifold 42. When sufficient resin has been admitted to the mould to cause the resin to overflow into the container 46, the cock 45 is closed and air under pressure may be admitted to the mould 40 to compact the casting. A simpler apparatus, Fig. 1 (not shown) with only one evacuating chamber is described. In this, the mould is open at the top and receives the resin through an annular passage in a bottom plate. Metal electrodes are embedded in the resin and fiJler. The moulds may be heated.
