Abstract

A nuclear fuel element contains a body of metal of low melting point with finely divided fuel in the metal. Suitable metals are Na, Li, Pb, Bi or eutectic alloys of these metals or Sn, Al, Ga or Hg. The fuel is uranium, plutonium, uranium dioxide or uranium carbide and represents up to 40 per cent or is of the order of 66 per cent by volume, and preferably has a particle size of 10 microns.
