Abstract

800,436. Removing scale from metal strip UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Oct. 31, 1955, No. 31055/55. Class 82(2) Oxide scale is removed from metal strip by passing the strip through nesting rolls including large diameter rolls and a small diameter bending roll, thus to effect sinuous flexing of the strip. The principle is illustrated in Fig. 4 where the strip S is shown passing through two sets of rolls each consisting of two large diameter rolls 37, 38 and a small diameter bending roll 47, the latter having a backing roll. The diameters of the bending rolls are related to the thickness of the strip and the rolls therefore are constructed to be readily replaceable. The upper assembly of each set of rolls is movable vertically to allow for threading the strip and to vary the pressure exerted on the strip whilst being flexed. This is done by hydraulic motors 35 (see Fig. 1) acting on links 26 and determining the vertical position of the upper roll members which are journalled in bearings 24, 25 sliding in guides 54. Each roll assembly has a link on either side and stop members are provided to limit their downward movement. Strip of varying transverse thickness is accommodated by setting the stops so that one link is arrested before the other and using springing of the machine frame to cant the rolls. The same effect can also be produced by a torsion bar in the linkage being arranged to pivot at one end about a bearing of adjustable eccentricity. Guide plates 96, 97 (see Fig. 4) assist in threading the strip and the 'former is provided with water through pipe 89 to assist in scale removal. A pressure roll 98 is povited against the strip as it leaves the last roll and further water sprays are arranged here, fed by pipe 93. Scrapers 83 remove loosened scale from the rolls. A modified machine is also. described and illustrated.
