Abstract

800,218. Fluid-pressure brakes. TALCO ENGINEERING CO. July 20, 1956, No. 22622/56. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXI] In an emergency brake-operating means for the wheels of a vehicle, an auxiliary chamber containing brake fluid is provided which may, upon failure of the usual brake operating mechanism, be connected through a suitable valve control circuit with the usual brake operating cylinder such that the fluid in the auxiliary cylinder is normally not under pressure but is adapted to be placed under pressure by the combustion of a cartridge containing combustible gas generating material which when ignited causes it to be supplied to the brake operating cylinder to operate the brakes. In the embodiment illustrated, when switch 35 is closed by the operator when the normal fluid pressure braking system fails, ignition of the priming material 27 in casing 17 will effect combustion of the combustible material 26 and the gas pressure generated will cause piston 19 to move to the right, compressing fluid 18 in casing 17 and forcing this fluid under pressure into conduit 14 past ball-valve 23 which will be forced off its seat by the pressure generated and fluid under pressure will enter wheel brake cylinder 12 to actuate brake shoes 11 in the usual manner. In opening ball-valve 23 against the spring pressure 24, the fluid pressure generated in casing 17 also forces ball-valve 23 on to seating 37 to close communication with the normal brake conduits through conduit 15. A modification is described and illustrated in the Specification in which the auxiliary fluid chamber is separate from the cartridge gas-generating means.
