Abstract
808,167. Moulding articles from thermoplastic materials. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. April 25, 1957 [Aug. 14, 1956], No. 13202/57. Class 87(2). Articles, e.g. containers, having uniform wall thickness are made from a liquid mixture of thermoplastic resin and a plasticizer, by filling a mould 1 with the mixture 20, applying saturated steam under a pressure of 20 to 100 lbs. per sq. in. to the mould to congeal a layer 21 of the mixture inside the mould, draining the uncongealed portion of the mixture and heating the mould to fuse the uncongealed layer. In the example the mould 1 comprises two sections 2, 3 bolted together at 5 and provided with a standpipe 6 which is loosely capped during the process. The mixture 20 comprises polyvinyl chloride with a plasticizer comprising, e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, dioctyl sebecate or tricresyl phosphate. Steam is circulated through an autoclave 7 and the mould 1 subsequently cooled by spraying with cold water from a pipe 11.
