Abstract
806,112. Cathode constructions and materials. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March, 30 1955, [April 9, 1954], No. 10566/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1). A coreless, coiled-coil cathode for an electric discharge device, especially a fluorescent discharge lamp, comprises a plurality of wires alongside one another formed into a coreless helix which is itself coiled into a helix, and coated with electron-emitting material. The primary helix contains no core of wire and is not overwound by any other wire. In one example two wires of tungsten 0À075 mm. diameter are wound parallel to and in contact with each other or twisted together, upon a mandrel of molybdenum 0À25 mm. diameter. The primary helix so formed and while still upon the mandrel is wound upon a mandrel 1À19 mm. diameter to form a secondary helix. After removal from the second mandrel the coiled-coil is set by sintering at a temperature of about 1500‹C. and the molybdenum mandrel is then dissolved away by nitric acid with or without sulphuric acid. The coiled-coil is then coated with an electron-emissive material, such as a mixture of barium, strontium and calcium carbonates in proportions of about 55 : 45 : 10 by weight, by dipping into a suspension of the powdered materials in a suspending medium. The space within the primary helix is filled as far as possible with the materials but not the space within the secondary helix. Specification 792,365 is referred to.
