Abstract
804,778. Piston packing. NATIONAL SUPPLY CO., and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. June 4, 1957, No. 17678/57. Class 122 (1). A pump piston comprises a body 11 having a radial flange 14 and is sealed in its cylinder by packing means disposed on each side of the flange and comprising an inner deformable ring 18 and an outer deformable ring 19 both having a free diameter larger than the cylinder bore and having juxtaposed surfaces 18a, 19a from which surfaces 18b, 19b extend radially outward to form a space 20 between the rings of volume at least equal to and preferably slightly larger than the volume of material displaced in the inner ring when the piston is inserted in its cylinder, Fig. 2. An annular disc 17 of impregnated fabric is inserted between the flange and the inner ring 18 and the packing is retained by a backing plate 22 located by a circlip 16. The surfaces 18b, 19b are conical and diverge and the peripheral surfaces of both rings 18 and 19 are flared outwardly to form lips 18c, 19c. The rings 18 and 19 are of natural or synthetic rubber. In a modification, Fig. 6, the conical surfaces 62, 63 are parallel and the radial juxtaposed surfaces 60, 61 are of differing radial extent.
