Abstract

804,163. Filters. SUDAN GEZIRA BOARD. June 22, 1956 [June 24, 1955], No. 18365/55. Class 46. A filter unit comprises a deep vessel 10 having an inlet 11 and outlet 12, both near the top of the vessel, separated by a porous filter screen 13, such as finely porous polyvinyl chloride sheet. Water enters through inlet 11 and jets 14 to the underside of the screen 13, which is inclined to the direction of flow so that the incoming water helps to dislodge residue on the screen. Filtrate passing through the screen leaves by the outlet 12 which is connected to a single acting pump, the pump being arranged to discharge a small amount of the filtrate back through the filter during its pumping stroke to backwash the screen 13. The filter may be used in connection with a water purification system where water is drawn from a canal or river to a settling basin and from where it passes through a filter of the above type and then to a polarizing purifier, for example of the ionic silver type of sterilizer, and thence to a storage tank.
