Abstract
Briquettes suitable for use in an electric furnace for the production of calcium carbide contain 45 per cent slaked lime, 12 per cent screened lime, 25 per cent anthracite, 11 per cent water and 7 per cent of a binder containing soft pitch, anthracene, naphthalene and redistillate.ALSO:Briquettes, for use in industrial furnaces, comprise metalliferous ore, combustible material and at least 5 per cent but not more than 12 per cent of water which, when the briquette is heated in a furnace, forms steam which acts as a carrier for the particles of tar or pitch condensed in the gas withdrawing zone of the furnace and prevents deposition of the tar or pitch in that zone. The water may be added chemically bonded to a constituent of the briquettes, e.g. as hydrate of lime or magnesia, dolomite or hydrated silicates, or mechanically bonded. Examples are given of briquette compositions containing, iron ore, manganese ore, chromium ore or pyrites with coal, coke, peat or sawdust and, as binder, pitch, anthracene, naphthalene, bitumen &c.
