Abstract

A composition comprising aggregate and/or sand bound with a vinyl homopolymer or a nitrogen-free vinyl copolymer is made by mixing the aggregate and/or the sand with a volatile organic solvent solution of the binder and evaporating the solvent. The composition may also include fillers such as powdered metal, e.g. aluminium, cement, e.g. Portland, rubber, bituminous material, cork, sawdust or earth, and plasticizers and stabilizers. The copolymer may be of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. Solvents mentioned are acetone, ethyl acetate, and methyl ethyl ketone.ALSO:A concrete-like composition comprising aggregate and/or sand and cement bound with a vinyl homopolymer or a nitrogen-free vinyl copolymer is made by mixing the aggregate and/or sand and cement with a volatile organic solvent solution of the binder and evaporating the solvent. The composition may also include fillers such as powdered metal, e.g., aluminium, rubber, bituminous material, cork, sawdust, or earth, and plasticizers and stabilizers. Solvents mentioned are acetone, ethyl acetate, and methyl ethyl ketone. In an example the composition is made by mixing 2-3 per cent by weight of the filler mix of a vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in acetone with stone chippings, sand, and Portland cement and allowing the acetone to evaporate.
