Abstract

796,799. Surgical fluid dispensers. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. March 15, 1956 [March 29, 1955], No. 8192/56. Class 81 (2). A closure for an injection fluid container comprises a cylindrical body 4 with an end wall 6 for detachable connection with the container outlet, tubular air inlet means 11 extending outwardly from the end wall 6, tubular liquid discharge means 9 integral with and extending outwardly from the end wall 6, the outer end of the liquid discharge means being formed to permit sealing engagement with a hypodermic syringe hub, and detachable covers for the cylindrical body and the liquid discharge means. A portion 4 extending from the end wall 6 has screwthreads 5, for attachment to the container, and a cover 21 which is removed when the closure is in use. An outwardly-extending part 9 of the discharge tube is provided with a tapered socket 10 for engagement with the hub of a hypodermic syringe when a cap 22 is removed. An inwardly-extending portion 8 of the discharge tube prevents sediment entering the discharge passage 7 when the closure is in use on an inverted container. An air inlet tube 11 extends outwardly from the end wall 6 and has a ball check valve 13 and a tapered socket 16. An apertured cap 17 mounted on the air inlet tube 11 contains a cotton wad or other filter material. The end wall 6, the air inlet tube 11 and the discharge tube may be made as a separate insert member which is mounted in a circular opening in the closure. The device is made of nylon, polystyrene or polyvinyl plastics, stainless steel, aluminium, rubber or glass. In use injection liquid is drawn into the syringe by retraction of its plunger when the syringe hub is inserted in the tapered socket 10 and the container is in inverted position.
