Abstract

796,336. Magnetic separators. BLENDING MACHINE CO., Ltd. May 14, 1956 [March 11, 1955], No. 7143/55. Class 117 A magnetic separator for fluent materials, e.g. powders, liquids, pastes and oils, comprises permanent magnets (not shown) of truncated V formation housed within a pair of aluminium blocks 10 and having mild steel pole pieces 111, the blocks being secured to angle members 12 supported on resilient supports 13. A rectangular casing 14 which fits within the gap between the pole pieces 111 contains ferrous metal grid plates 16 and non-ferrous spacing members 15 and is provided with a hopper 142. The fluent material is caused to flow through the casing 14 via the hopper 142, any ferrous particles adhering to the grid plates 16; the whole assembly may be vibrated as a unit by a vibrator 19. To clean the grid plates the casing is removed from between the pole pieces, thus demagnetizing the plates which may be removed from the casing. To facilitate cleaning with the plates in situ a tray 17 may be withdrawn from the bottom of the casing; the tray may serve for regulating the flow of material being treated. A modification, Fig. 7, comprises a grid plate structure 21 which may be removed as a unit from the casing 14. Alternatively, magnetizable rods in superposed horizontal relationship may be provided. In a further modification, the casing may be provided with parallel plates the surfaces of which have superposed sets of fingers arranged in louvre-like formation. More than one pair of magnets may be employed and the pole pieces may be in tapering planes or in planes inclined to the vertical. Electromagnets are specified.
