Abstract

781,820. Grinding springs. MARQUETTE METAL PRODUCTS CO. Aug. 10, 1955, No. 23064/55. Class 60. [Also in Groups XXIV, XXXII and XXXIV] A method of producing a helical spring for clutches (see Group XXIV) and brakes, from a single piece of metal stock of uniform crosssection, and so as to have a main coil portion 12 of one cross-section and a control coil portion 10 of reduced cross-section, comprises, coiling the stock to form a cylindrical blank, forcibly supporting the blank on relatively radially stepped respective peripheral surface portions of an arbor or collet (see upper half of Fig. 3), and removing metal from the control coil forming portions of the blank while so supported (as shown in lower half of Fig. 3). As shown, with the blank mounted in a collet 16, the metal is removed by grinding. The amount of stock removed is usually limited to the sub-surface peripheral portion of the spring in which the metal has been strained beyond its elastic limit. The diameter of the control coil portion 10, relative to the diameter of the portion 12, may however be controlled within a large range by the amount of stock removed. In a modification, centerless grinding is performed.
