Abstract
Cations are removed from aqueous solution by bringing the solution into contact with a solid anion exchange substance, insoluble in water and having at the exchange positions anions which will form insoluble compounds with the cations. A precipitate of the insoluble compound forms on the surface of the exchange substance and may be removed by washing with aqueous acid or a complexing agent. In examples: (1) an aqueous solution containing caesium, strontium, iron, uranium, cerium, and copper in the form of nitrates is passed through an anion exchange resin in the hydroxide form; the effluent containing only caesium and strontium is passed through an anion exchange resin in the carbonate form to precipitate strontium; caesium is recovered from the remaining solution by precipitation with phosphotungstic acid; (2) anion exchange resin in the hydroxide form is contacted with solutions containing silver, copper, iron, cobalt, lead, or lanthanum; resin in the carbonate form is used to treat solutions of strontium, barium, and calcium salts; resin in the chromate form is used to treat solutions containing silver; and resin in the sulphide form is used to treat solutions containing mercury or cobalt ions; (3) a solution of uranium fission products is treated with resin in the hydroxide form to remove yttrium, lanthanum, rare earths, zirconium, cerium, ruthenium, iron, chromium, nickel, uranium, and aluminium, leaving a solution containing caesium, rubidium, strontium, and sodium.ALSO:Cations are removed from aqueous solution by bringing the solution into contact with a solid anion exchange substance, insoluble in water and having at the exchange positions anions which will form insoluble compounds with the cations.
