781,377. Moulding plastic articles from powder. MARKITE INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. July 12, 1954, No. 20367/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXVI] A plastic article is made from two plastics which differ chemically from each other, at least one of the plastics comprising particles which are of irregular shape and less than 60 mesh in size, the two plastics being moulded together in a mould to produce a single article. The two plastics may each be in the form of a powder ; or one plastic may be in powder form and the other a moulding ; or two preforms may be co-moulded. The powder may be less than 100 mesh and may be made by feeding moulding powder into a disintegrating mill. The two different plastics may be (1) polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene and (2) polymethylmethacrylate or phenolic plastic ; of (1) polystyrene and (2) phenolic plastic or polymethylmethacrylate. In one example powder of one kind is filled into a mould 1, then a spacer 3 is removed to lower the powder level, powder of a different kind is filled in, another spacer is removed to lower both lots of powder, a plunger 4 is inserted and both lots are hot-pressed. In a second example one lot of powder is compressed before the second lot is filled into the mould. In a third example a bottom force 14 (Fig. 3 plan, Fig. 4 sectional elevation) is fitted into the lower end of cylinder 1 and a recess 15 in the force is filled with one kind of plastic particles and levelled off. Then a charge of a different kind of plastic particles is filled into the cylinder and the whole compressed hot. Fig. 6 shows a sleeve open at both ends and divided by a partition 34 into two chambers 35, 36. This sleeve is fitted into cylinder 1, the chambers are filled with different plastic particles, the sleeve is lifted out and the two lots of particles are hot-pressed to form a single article. In Fig. 7 a disc 44 of cured phenolic material having an elevated ring 45 machined thereon is united with pigmented phenolic powder 43 contained in a groove in a lower mould plate 41, by hot-pressing. By adding electrically-conductive material to the powder 43 an electric resistor may be made, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown).
